This fall, three middle school groups visited Elkton, Pigeon, and Bay Port to complete some community service projects (cleaning parks and a boat launch area). These projects are part of a district goal to connect with our communities in different ways. At the middle school, the homerooms are divided into three teams that pay homage to the district's history—the Elkton Elks, the Pigeon Panthers, and the Bay Port Clippers. Each team had students sign up to participate in a clean-up project.
"We had a great turnout throughout, and the students were eager to support the community," said Laker Middle School Principal Scott Miklovic.
The fall projects are complete, Mr. Miklovic said, and the teams will go again in the spring.
"For future projects, we will be asking our students for creative ideas on how to support the local towns," he noted.
Mr. Miklovic said there are many benefits involved in these projects.
"It builds civic duty and community pride," he said. "Students are given an opportunity to give back to the communities they live in. It gives students leadership opportunities, provides skill development, and improves the community parks. I'm super proud of our students. They took ownership of the projects and did a tremendous job. Go Green!"
