
Lakers has the fortune to welcome several new staffers to our team! From left: Bethany Castle, Laker Legacy Center Coordinator; Jillian Buss, Laker Elementary parapro; Amy Breuer, Laker Middle School math intervention teacher; Kyle VanHorn, Laker High School special education teacher; Emma Kociba, Laker Elementary 2nd-grade teacher; Will Spicer, technology coordinator; and Ashley Solosky, Laker Middle School social studies teacher. We are excited to have these awesome people on our staff!
Here is more information about some of our new staff:
Bethany Castle - Graduated from Sandusky High School and Hillsdale College, with a bachelor's in Spanish. She also acquired additional certifications in personal training, 500hr yoga teacher, and nutrition coaching. She teaches yoga and fitness classes at the Treehouse Yoga & Wellness in Bad Axe, and recently enjoyed working in Community Wellness at Scheurer Health.
"I am most looking forward to meeting and getting to know everyone and creating some fun events for us all to enjoy at the LC!"Kyle VanHorn - Graduated from Kingston High School; earned an associate's degree in science from Delta College and received his teaching certification from Saginaw Valley State University. He previously worked at Owendale-Gagetown and Kingston Schools.
"I am looking forward to meeting the great team. There have been a lot of individuals who have reached out to me, asking if I need anything, and they are ready to support me in my role. "
Emma Kociba - Graduated from Bad Axe High School and just graduated from Saginaw Valley State University earlier this year. She previously worked as a permanent sub in kindergarten at Bad Axe Public Schools. "I am looking forward to setting students up for success and helping them grow and become the best version of themselves! "
Will Spicer - Graduated from Ubly High School; earned an associate's degree from Central Bible University. He previously worked for Youth for Christ. "I look forward to helping others while building relationships. "
Ashley Solosky - Graduated from Midland High School and Saginaw Valley State University. She previously worked at Coleman Schools as a full-time substitute. "I am most excited about getting to know my students! I look forward to showing up for them in any way that I can! I’m very excited to become part of the Lakers community as my own children will come here, too."


Every spring, Laker Elementary hosts a Spring Program in which each grade level performs multiple songs, many of them including instruments. The 5th-Grade Band also performs. This video features highlights from each grade level performing at the Laker Elementary spring program, including the 5th-grade band.
Such a fun day! On May 27, Laker Elementary students enjoyed a Bounce Into Summer Party, hosted by the Laker Elementary PTOC! The Bouncy House action took place during their specials time, and after lunch, students savored a free ice cream treat from an ice cream truck! Click the link below for a video of the action!

Congratulations to the Laker Elementary Spotlight Students for first quarter. Each classroom teacher selects two students for this award each marking period. The recipients are honored at a special breakfast ceremony attended by parents/guardians. Thank you to Thumb Bank and Trust for sponsoring this program. NOTE - second graders are pictured separately because they had a field trip that morning and couldn't stay for the entire ceremony.

U.S. News and World Report recently released its 2026 Best Elementary Schools ranking, and Laker Elementary placed among the top 40% of elementary schools in Michigan, making it a U.S. News Best Elementary School.
